Reach for the Sky! Extra-Tall Pilings Installed in World Showcase Lagoon at EPCOT for New Fireworks Show

While visiting EPCOT this afternoon, we couldn’t help but notice some extra-tall pilings recently installed in World Showcase Lagoon for the upcoming EPCOT fireworks show set to debut…sometime.

As you can see in our photos below, the pilings are much taller than the existing pilings, which could mean several things. Our first thought is that they’re just extra-tall and crews weren’t able to drive them deep enough with the equipment they have. The existing pilings that are just above the water level are roughly 50′ long, with just the top 3-5′ above the water. It’s possible that these extra-long pilings were tougher to drive to depth for some reason and so they look very out of place at the moment.

Here are a couple of normal-height pilings already in place with markings showing they are about 50′ long and driven into the bottom of World Showcase Lagoon.

The extra-tall pilings are also driven to about the 50′ mark, but they have markings that run the full length of the piling (although not fully visible from this angle).

Following widespread complaints about the sightlines of Harmonious, it’s hard to imagine that Disney wants these pilings sticking out like this permanently for the new show, but time will tell. Disney already looks to be going back to the rounded barge concept, although with a lower profile and movable.

Here’s a look at concept art for the new show that Disney World has previously said will debut this year, but was not mentioned in a recent press release.
