Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party has returned to Magic Kingdom for the first time since 2019 and that means that the attraction overlays that debuted in 2019 are also back for guests to enjoy! In this article, we’ll take a look at the Christmas overlay for Space Mountain called Space Mountain – Holiday Run!! as well as something new for the 2022 version of Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.
We’ll start with what’s new – an exterior lighting package that uses Space Mountain as a canvas for some festive holiday colors. We saw the debut of the exterior lighting package during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, and we’re happy to see Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party also using the lighting package. This will be especially important once TRON Lightcycle Run opens next to Space Mountain with an impressive illuminated canopy. Now it’s time to venture inside, where Disney promises “an adventure through the cosmos, filled with interstellar lighting and high-energy holiday tunes.”
When it debuted in 2019, we thought that Space Mountain – Holiday Run was one of the highlights of Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. During Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, guests get a “Deep Space” overlay that essentially hurls you though space in pitch-black darkness while rock music plays. That overlay was disappointing, but then Disney created Holiday Run, which utilizes a massive amount of lighting effects to create a really unique and fun spin on Space Mountain. We actually like this version so much that we recommend riding the Tomorrowland PeopleMover if you have some time so that you can see the holiday overlay from a unique perspective.
