Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially banned so-called “Vaccine Passports” via executive order today. The executive order comes after DeSantis foreshadowed that he would institute the ban earlier this week.

The order says that passports would “create two classes of citizens”, and notes that “many Floridians have not yet had the opportunity to obtain a COVID-19 vaccination”. The executive order covers a few critical points on how the governor intends to implement and enforce the ban on “Vaccine Passports”.

First, the government of the state of Florida is prohibited from issuing any standardized documentation that is meant to certify an individual’s COVID-19 vaccination status to a third party.

Next, businesses are prohibited from requiring customers to provide any documentation certifying COVID-19 vaccination to gain access, entry, or service from the business.

Also, businesses who do not comply with the order would not be eligible to receive grants or contracts funded through state revenue. Agencies will also be able to withhold licenses, permits, or other state authorizations necessary for conducting business should a business not comply with this executive order.

Finally, DeSantis says that this order is not meant to restrict businesses from instituting COVID-19 screening protocols to protect public health.

The order will be in place as long as the state of emergency is in effect for the state of Florida.

Functionally, this shouldn’t impact the operations of Walt Disney World, which requires all guests to continue wearing a face covering and practice social distancing – even if they are fully vaccinated.
