Following a Financial Times report that the Florida legislature under Governor Ron DeSantis is preparing to make a “u-turn” on legislation to dismantle the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a spokesperson for DeSantis denied the report and promised details soon (via NBC News).
In a statement, DeSantis’ office said that he “does not make u-turns”. The statement went on to say “The governor was right to champion removing the extraordinary benefit given to one company through the Reedy Creek Improvement District. We will have an even playing field for businesses in Florida, and the state certainly owes no special favors to one company. Disney’s debts will not fall on the taxpayers of Florida. A plan is in the works and will be released soon”.
While details were not provided, DeSantis has previously said that he wants the State of Florida to control the Reedy Creek Improvement District and he said that he would make The Walt Disney Company pay nearly $1 billion of district debt. Experts have previously noted that Disney is under no obligation to pay the debt, and that it would be passed on to taxpayers.
It’s unclear what victory looks like here for DeSantis, but Disney has reportedly been working on a solution via lobbyists since May to help the governor “save face”.
